BUTLER, John George, a House Chaplain; born in Cumberland, Allegany County, Md., January 28, 1826; attended Cumberland Academy, Cumberland, Md.; attended Pennsylvania College (now Gettysburg College), Gettysburg, Pa.; pastor, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Washington, D.C., 1849–1873; chaplain, 5th Regiment, Pennsylvania volunteers, 1861–1865; chair, Homiletics and Church History, Howard University, Washington, D.C.; pastor, Luther Place Memorial Church, Washington, D.C., 1873–1909; professor, Howard University, Washington, D.C.; Chaplain of the United States Senate, 1886–1893; elected Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives to the Forty-first and to the two succeeding Congresses (March 9, 1869–March 3, 1875); died on August 2, 1909, in Washington, D.C.; interment at Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
