THOMPSON, John, a Representative from New York; born in Litchfield, Conn., March 20, 1749; attended the common schools; at the age of fourteen moved with his parents to Stillwater, N.Y.; served in the Revolutionary War; appointed justice of Stillwater Township in 1788; member of the State assembly in 1788 and 1789; elected as a Republican to the Sixth Congress (March 4, 1799-March 3, 1801); delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention in 1801; was appointed by Governor Clinton in 1791 as first judge of Saratoga County and held this office until 1809; elected to the Tenth and Eleventh Congresses (March 4, 1807-March 3, 1811); died in Stillwater, Saratoga County, N.Y., September 30, 1823; interment in a cemetery at Stillwater, N.Y.
