Biography

SCHADEBERG, Henry Carl, a Representative from Wisconsin; born in Manitowoc, Manitowoc County, Wis., October 12, 1913; graduated from Manitowoc public schools; Carroll College, Waukesha, Wis., B.A., 1938, and Garrett Biblical Institute, Evanston, Ill., B.D., 1941; clergyman; served in the United States Navy as a chaplain from 1943 to 1946 and in the Korean conflict from 1952 to 1953; captain in the United States Naval Reserve until retirement in 1969; elected as a Republican to the Eighty-seventh and Eighty-eighth Congresses (January 3, 1961-January 3, 1965); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1964; delegate, Republican State conventions since 1960; delegate, Republican National Convention, 1964; elected to the Ninetieth and Ninety-first Congresses (January 3, 1967-January 3, 1971); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1970 to the Ninety-second Congress; was a resident of Rockbridge Baths, Va., until his death there December 11, 1985; ashes interred at Hill-Valley Ranch.

The papers of Henry Carl Schadeberg consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, press releases, newsletters, speeches, bills, and clippings concerning legislative initiatives and issues with which Henry Schadeberg was prominently involved such as pornography, lakeshore erosion and pollution, support of U.S. involvement in Vietnam, and governmental fiscal restraint. Project files document Henry Schadeberg's work on behalf of the development of Bong Air Force Base, the retention of the Racine Coast Guard Station, Wisconsin mink ranchers, church and state relations, and other district concerns. Additional material includes correspondence, memoranda, subject files, project files and lists of Congressional Record remarks, radio broadcast scripts, and other speeches. Documents concern such topics as the House Un-American Activities Committee, tariffs, a Canadian automobile agreement, Panama, and the Peace Corps. There are also photographs of images of Henry Schadeberg, his constituents, the Beloit Hospital, the Tan Lap School, and a report on Lake Michigan shore erosion.
