BRYAN, Joseph



BRYAN, Joseph, a Representative from Georgia; born in Savannah, Ga., August 18, 1773; was educated by private tutors and attended Oxford University in England; traveled in France during the Revolutionary War; engaged in agricultural pursuits on Wilmington Island, Ga.; elected as a Republican to the Eighth and Ninth Congresses and served from March 4, 1803, until his resignation in 1806; engaged in planting; died on his estate, "Nonchalance," Wilmington Island, near Savannah, Ga., on September 12, 1812; interment in the family burial ground on his estate.

Papers: 1801-1807, 2 items. This collection consists of an award granted to Ebenezer Jackson and paid by Joseph Bryan for a dispute over 100 acres on Whitemarsh Island, Georgia. The document is dated April 8, 1801. The second item in the collection is a certified copy from the Chatham County, Georgia, Superior Court office (1901) of a relinquishment of any claims against the estate of James Bryan. The relinquishment was made by David and Ann Middleton to Joseph Bryan, Hannah Houston and Mary Wylly on November 11, 1808. A finding aid is available in the repository.
