This letter from Charles C. Curtis, National Organizer of the National Colored Personal Liberty League, was sent to Representative
Joseph Cannon on November 9, 1902. According to an article in
The Colored American from April 28, 1900, the National Colored Personal Liberty League, an organization of African-American men established in 1895, had more than 5,000 members. In the letter, Curtis asked Cannon for money so that the League could create materials supporting Cannon’s Speaker election. Curtis mentioned at the end of the letter how the organization had assisted Albert Jarvis Hopkins in his successful bid for a Senate seat.
