In August 1949, Elpidio Quirino made history as the first president of the independent Philippines to visit the United States. During his five day visit, he addressed the House of Representatives and touched on the difficulties the new nation faced in post–World War II Asia, particularly in relation to the ascendency of communism in China. He left, according to news reports, “empty-handed but full-hearted.”
