Object Details

When Schuyler Colfax of Indiana was elected Speaker of the House in 1863, the occasion was marked with this print and the accompanying article, which noted that “Mr. Colfax is a self-made man, who, by force of his native powers and in despite of the want of a classical education, has raised himself to the high position which he now occupies.” After three terms in that high position, he left it to become Ulysses S. Grant’s Vice President.
