This unusual 1904 campaign button is printed entirely in red, a play on ginger-bearded Everis Hayes’ nickname, “Red Hayes.” He represented a California district, where he and his brother built their political base by controlling the press. Using their mining wealth, the Hayes brothers acquired and consolidated local newspapers into the San Jose Mercury Herald.
