A pre-Congress job or a winning streak may have California Congressman Bob Mathias smiling so confidently in this congressional baseball card. Perhaps it was his athletic history as a two-time Olympic gold medalist for the decathlon. Maybe it was the knowledge that his team of Republican Members was in the ninth year of a winning streak. This baseball card is part of a complete set produced that year by Sears, Roebuck and Co. to commemorate the 1972 Congressional Baseball Game, a friendly competition between Democrat and Republican Members of Congress. The reverse side described the highly anticipated event and claimed thousands of fans turned out to cheer on the Representatives.
