J. Edgar Hoover addressed his letter to “Mother Kahn,” a tribute to Florence Kahn’s reliable support of Hoover’s Federal Bureau of Investigation. She was nicknamed, by Hoover, the “Mother of the F.B.I.” Kahn’s more famous roles were as the first woman on the Appropriations and Military Affairs Committees.
