Harper’s Weekly gave its readers a sense of the crowded House Chamber in sketches of the 1888 tariff debate. William Breckinridge looks the part of the smooth old-fashioned orator, Thomas Brackett Reed laughs at a good joke, and William McKinley demonstrates his well-known command of specifics by exhibiting a $10 wool suit in refutation of an opponent’s claim that the tariff policy raised prices on clothing.
