Since the American Revolution, the Congress has commissioned gold medals as its highest expression of national appreciation. This pass admitted the bearer to the gold medal ceremony for the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of 994 African-American pilots who gained fame during World War II for their heroism escorting American bombers in raids over Europe and North Africa.
