Object Details

Joe Martin, the Republican Representative of Massachusetts, was featured in Life magazine as the “ablest Congressmen.” He won this title by turning the GOP minority into a “spirited, constructive opposition.” Martin had a 42-year career in the House; he was elected in 1924 and stayed in office until 1967. During his time in Congress, Martin served as the Speaker of the House for four years and Republican Minority Leader for eight years.
