Known as the “father” of the first nuclear-powered merchant ship, the Savannah, Herbert Bonner chaired the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committees for a decade. His maritime work was closely related to his district’s interests in Coast Guard appropriations and navigation projects. This 1956 portrait was painted by fellow North Carolinian Mabel Pugh. Pugh studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and spent many years teaching art at Peace College in Raleigh, North Carolina.
