“The Spirit of the American Doughboy,” a beloved and oft-reproduced sculpture, stands in the background of this portrait, over the left shoulder of Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton. It was a familiar sight to Skelton during his years as a student at Missouri’s Lexington Military Academy. More than a hundred such versions of this statue, a tribute to World War I soldiers, were erected around the coutnry. This version was purchased by the Academy’s alumni as a memorial to their classmates who died in the war.
