Idaho’s first woman in Congress, Gracie Bowers Pfost was elected to the House in 1952 and served through 1962. Her fight for construction of a federally funded and operated dam at Hells Canyon earned her the nickname Hell’s Belle. Despite losing the battle to private electric companies, she remained a strong presence in the House. After leaving Congress, she was appointed Special Assistant for Elderly Housing at the Federal Housing Authority.
