Katharine Edgar Byron, shown here with her children, came to the House in 1941 after a plane crash killed her husband, Congressman William D. Byron. Maryland’s first woman in Congress, she was elected as a Democrat and backed President Franklin Roosevelt’s foreign policies. Byron’s son Goodloe (second from the left), with help from his mother on the campaign trail, won a House seat in 1970.
