John Wise, who would be elected to Congress in 1882, was profiled by Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper during his campaign. The article accompanying his portrait at the upper right gives an account of his life from birth in 1846 through the minutiae of post–Civil War Virginia politics, where Wise was running as a member of Readjuster party, the state’s biracial coalition of Republicans and moderate Democrats.
