The Republican baseball team, winless since 1947, narrowly missed breaking their five-game losing streak. The final score gave the same to the Democrats, 3-2, but that wasn’t the only entertainment for the holder of this ticket to the 1953 Congressional Baseball Game. Celebrated athletes from across the sporting world showed up to the charity game, fresh from a luncheon hosted by President Eisenhower. Notables included English Channel swimmer Florence Hardwick, tennis great Helen Jacobs, Olympian Jesse Owens, and baseball stars Joe DiMaggio and Lefty Grove, who charitably said, “Not bad baseball. Not bad at all.”
