In 1940, the Ways and Means Committee occupied the largest hearing room in the House. The room was designed as the showplace of what is now the Longworth House Office Building, with elaborate plasterwork and light fixtures. From 1949 to 1951, it also served as the House’s meeting place, while the House Chamber underwent its first renovation since 1857.
