Everett Dirksen was a towering figure in 20th century congressional history. This palm card dates from his House service, which began in 1933 and continued until his departure for the Senate in 1949. Although he was a Republican, Dirksen supported most of Democratic President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal policies. Dirksen was a close colleague of Congresswoman Jeannette Rankin, and in 1941 he tried unsuccessfully to persuade her to vote for America’s declaration of war against Japan.
