Object Details

This print depicts a milestone in American history in an unassuming Capitol hearing room. When Victoria Woodhull rose and argued for the right to vote, she became the first woman to testify before a House committee. She and other suffragists were in Washington when supporter Chairman Benjamin Butler invited movement leaders to the hearing. They seized the opportunity and commanded the attention of both the House and the media, who reported it from coast to coast.
