Collection of the U.S. House of Representatives, Jim Oliver Collection
William Jennings Bryan Dorn used a popular studio backdrop for the photograph on this 1970 palm card. Like many painted portraits in the House, the Capitol and an American flag are prominent reminders of the subject’s role in public life. A desk with blotter and book indicate that the congressman is a hardworking public servant. Dorn was indeed a public servant of long standing, from his first election to the South Carolina state legislature in 1938 until his retirement from Congress in 1975.
