Object Details

Three powerful House Committee Chairmen were shown dining together in this gently cheeky print. Polish artist Zdzislaw Czermanski’s taut lines and soft tonalities were much admired by European magazine editors. Newly launched Fortune Magazine brought him to Washington to depict American politicians and financiers in its pages. While his love of caricature is evident, the artist also made a remarkably accurate rendering of the Members’ Dining Room, the space reserved for Representatives within the House Restaurant, with its uniformed waiters and elaborate decorations.
