In the early 20th century, this postcard immortalized Speaker Thomas Brackett Reed’s birthplace at 15 Hancock Street in Portland, Maine. A well-known and powerful leader in Congress, Reed’s house served as an attraction in his hometown. To create this postcard, the Detroit Publishing Company used a process they called Phostint, which transferred black and white photograph negatives onto lithograph plates, from which the color print was made.
