When the 1857 House wing of the Capitol opened, the Speaker occupied this room adjacent to the House Chamber. Stylishly decorated private areas of the Capitol were prime subjects for stereoviews, because they allowed the general public a glimpse of the grand new building. Here, fanciful cherub-shaped sconces, portraits of former Speakers, a pair of bust sculptures, and a large gilt-framed mirror give an impression of grandeur and the status of the Speaker of the House.
