John Conyers came to Congress in 1965, ultimately becoming the longest-serving African-American Member of Congress. The Government Operations Committee was one of three committees he led, and the first for which his portrait was commissioned. Artist Simmie Knox placed a gavel, the only hint of the subject’s leadership position within view, near Conyers’ hand. The focus is instead on the Chairman himself, who dominates the canvas.
