Portraits were not commonly produced in stereo format, and this view of Speaker Joseph Cannon shows some of the reasons for their rarity. The strength of the format was their ability to create depth of space, but those spaces, though highly detailed, can appear airless and stilted. Here, the closed space and awkward pose do not convey the notoriously lively character of the cantankerous Speaker. The fame of “Uncle Joe,” however, is perhaps indicated by this attempt to market his image.
