Campaign materials evolved over the course of the 19th century, and Ohio Member Darius Hare’s campaign ribbon is an interesting example of new printing processes applied to the traditional campaign ribbon. The line block portrait image, likely from a photograph, is printed on the silk ribbon, along with the candidate’s name and the announcement of Hare as “The Winner.” Advances in large-scale printing techniques were most often on display in illustrated periodicals, but they could be transferred to other media, such as silk, as well and contributed to the proliferation of images in daily life toward the turn of the 20th century.
