New York Representative John R. Fellows had his photo taken by Napoleon Sarony, a well-known character and photographer whose subjects included Samuel Clemens, actress Sarah Bernhardt, and most famously—due to a copyright dispute with the sitter—Oscar Wilde. Sarony’s talent for creating relaxed and engaging images of his sitters despite long exposure times is evident in this example. Fellows leans casually to the side on the arm of the chair, gazing out to the viewer as if engaged in conversation.
