This carte-de-visite of Representative William Darrah Kelley dates from early in his long congressional career, which lasted from the 1860s until his death in 1890. His service and was marked by several chairmanships, most notably of the Ways and Means Committee. Kelley’s image was made by M. B. Brady & Co. National Photographic Portrait Galleries, the studio owned by famed Civil War photographer Mathew Brady. The studio had two locations, one on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington and the other on Broadway in New York, and catered to politicians and actors.
