William Campbell represented a New York district from 1846 to 1848, but the inscription on this carte-de-visite dates to later in his career, when he was engaged in writing and historical work. The image was taken in famed Civil War photographer Mathew Brady’s National Photographic Portrait Galleries, which had two locations, one on Broadway and 10th Street in New York, the other at 352 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. These locations were convenient for Brady’s most numerous clientele, actors and politicians.
