Jonas Reece Emrie’s carte-de-visite was taken by the grandly named Photographic Palace of Fine Art in Chicago. As was common in the medium, traditional portrait conventions are used in composing the photograph. Here, Emrie appears to have just arrived from the outdoors, still in his hat and overcoat, with one glove removed, a pose typically employed to convey an active, sporting image.
