Appropriations Committee Chairman and the leader of the Andrew Johnson impeachment commission, Thaddeus Stevens had a level of celebrity typical of cartes-de-visite subjects. Calling card–sized albumen prints of actors, politicians, and other notable public figures were collected rapaciously by the public from the time of the format’s invention in the mid-1850s until the 1870s, when a larger iteration of the same idea—the cabinet card—came into vogue.
