Speaker John Carlisle’s carte-de-visite photograph by Washington, D.C., studio C. M. Bell became the basis of numerous images of the House Speaker, Senator, and presidential candidate. This three-quarter, bust-length image appears again in tobacco cards, wood engravings in illustrated periodicals, and in his Speaker portrait in the Collection of the U.S. House of Representatives.
