Jessie Sumner was one of only eight women serving in the House when this photograph was taken in 1940. An outspoken isolationist, she opposed America’s participation in the United Nations and criticized the Bretton Woods Agreements, which established the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Despite securing re-election in 1944, she retired from the House in 1946 to serve as director and, later, president of the Sumner National Bank in her home state of Illinois.
