The placement of a Christmas tree in Statuary Hall in December of 1962 marked a revival of holiday trees at the Capitol. The first Capitol Christmas tree, a 40-foot Norway spruce, was installed on the East Front Plaza in 1913. The tradition ended two years later, with officials citing a lack of funds. House Speaker John McCormack reinstated the custom nearly 50 years later with this modest version.
