A dedicated public servant, Julia Butler Hansen held elective office at the local, state, and federal level for a total of 43 years. Elected to represent a Washington district, she came to the House in 1960 with a legislative agenda that included transportation infrastructure, resource management, and improving living standards for Native Americans. In her final years in Congress, she chaired the Democratic Caucus Committee on Organization, Study, and Review—better known as the Hansen Committee—tasked with revamping the House committee system.
