Unveiled in 2011, Charlie Rangel’s Ways and Means Committee Chairman portrait is set in a non-specific, ceremonial office-like space. Frequently seen symbols—flags and a gavel— are used as a visual shorthand to denote his position as a public servant and a chairman. More personal details also populate the space and give a fuller sense of his personality and accomplishments. The artist includes Rangel’s military decorations in the background, as well as a copy of his autobiography among other books beside him.
