Every Saturday was one of dozens of literary and general interest magazines available in the decades following the Civil War, as a sizeable middle class and the very notion of a leisurely Saturday came into being. For those Americans who did visit Washington, the chance to see the Capitol in person and perhaps call on one’s Member of Congress was a treasured memory in a day of sightseeing. If one couldn’t visit Washington and climb to the top of the Capitol, an image of the journey could be enjoyed in the comfort of one’s home.
