Former major leaguer turned Congressman Wilmer “Vinegar Bend” Mizell fired one down the middle to Representative Lee Hamilton during the 1969 Congressional Baseball Game at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. Mizell’s pitching led the Republicans to a 6–2 victory over the Democrats, the sixth straight win for the Grand Old Party. Mizell, who ended his professional baseball career with the New York Mets, remarked that the game was the longest stint of pitching he’d done in seven years.
