A staunch advocate for women’s rights, Winifred Claire Stanley was the first Member of Congress to introduce an equal pay for equal work bill. She was also instrumental in renewing the fight for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment in 1943, 20 years after it was first introduced in the House. Ironically, she was shown here after earning the Fashion Academy’s award for the best-dressed woman in public life.
