The large walnut secretaire, with its central fall-front writing surface and elaborate decorative elements, is one of the oldest pieces of furniture in the House. Much thought went into its design, which balances Victorian curlicues with patriotic symbols. On the cornice, an elaborately carved eagle spreads its wings over a treasure trove of early American objects—powder horn, rifle, tomahawk, arrows and quiver. The desk door is decorated with another eagle, hovering over a shield with the scales of Justice. To the left is Lady Liberty and to the right is a Native American in buckskin. The doors on either side are decorated with another pair of eagles.
