The nation plunged into mourning when President James Garfield died, mortally wounded by an assassin just a few months after taking office. Harper’s Weekly published this print of Garfield’s coffin lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda, noting that “thousands of people passed in orderly and solemn procession on either side of the casket on Wednesday night and Thursday, pausing a moment to take a last look at the face of the dead.”
