Harper’s Weekly put the Georgia congressional delegation on the cover of its first issue of 1861, the eve of the state’s secession from the Union. When Abraham Lincoln, the candidate of the anti-slavery, northern Republican Party, won the 1860 presidential election, states in the lower South moved quickly to call state conventions to consider secession. Georgia’s convention met on January 16. A week later, the entire House delegation resigned. The slower Senators from Georgia left Congress a few days later.
