This print from Harper’s Weekly shows the growing move to repeal the Sherman Silver Purchase Act. The act was passed in 1890, requiring the purchase of silver by the government, but it had not put a stop to deflation, as was hoped. When the economic crisis of 1893 occurred, a stock market panic followed. A special session of Congress in August of 1893 had to overcome an 88-day Senate filibuster by supporters of the act before the repeal went forward. Some of the major players in the House were depicted here by artist H. M. Wilder: former Speaker Thomas Brackett Reed; future Speaker Joe Cannon; and Representatives Wilson, Holman, and Rayner.
