The cartoon in the upper left corner of this 1882 issue of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper warns of the perils of mixing profit and politics. A Congressman leaves the Capitol carrying both a bag marked “Private Pickings” and a banner announcing him as a “Public Plunderer.” The Capitol’s entrance is loaded down with signs offering bargains for sale inside: “Ye Political Market” and “Bargains made here & jobs of all kinds on hand,” among others.
