Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper made a prescient choice when it chose to profile Congressman John Carlisle of Kentucky as a strong contender for the Speakership when the new Congress convened in 1883. Carlisle was indeed elected Speaker and went on to serve in that capacity for six years. His colleague Congressman Abram Hewitt of New York said of Carlisle, “He is an intellectual slot machine. Drop a problem in and instantly, its solutions come forth.”
