Illustrated newspapers were often grab bags of articles about events across the nation. This page from Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper contains illustrations related to four different articles. Congressman John Kasson of Iowa occupies the upper right. Kasson was in his third nonconsecutive period of House service. Elsewhere on the page are images of the very latest in pneumatic motors; a Connecticut high school gutted by fire; and Washington’s “pestilential Potomac Flats,” which was reclaimed beginning in 1882.
