Montana Congressman Jerry O’Connell, shown with his wife, spoke to reporters as they arrived in Washington by train in 1938. O'Connell had been prevented from delivering a pro-labor union speech in Jersey City, New Jersey, where Mayor Frank Hague had banned him upon the dubious claim that he was involved with "Reds, Radicals, and Communists." O'Connell accused Mayor Frank Hague of orchestrating his detainment by police and ejection from the city, and requested federal intervention in the city's affairs.
